being neutral continues to be a challenge

Thursday's progress
Friday's progress
Sunday's progress

I won't be boring by posting the umpteen other arrangements.
Maybe just use one color in the strips,

or perhaps stay totally neutral, like my original commitment,

or make many more multi-color strips to play with.
Or rearrange all of the blocks, yet again.
Or better yet, slash all these blocks and then rearrange.
Oh yeah, at this point the measurements are approximately 50" x 60"
and I am shooting for a finished size of around 66" x 78" or lap size.

  1. Personally, I like the strips (with color or neutral) mixed in with the blocks.

    Keep playing! I like it.

  2. I like this very much!
Do you make the whole block and then quilt it? or are you quilting one strip at a time? Looking at the pictures, it looks like you constructed the whole block and then quilted it.

  3. I think you should go totally neutral and see how you like it once it's all done. The last picture is my favorite, it looks great 100% neutral.

  4. Thanks Debbie! I began with the "Quilt as you Go" technique, which has been around for ages. But I was re inspired to try this
by Marianne's blog: (click) www.thequiltingedge.com. I did quilt the first two blocks but decided to wait til I had my final arrangement decided before I quilted anymore blocks.

  8. Interesting process. These blocks are so sober when they are neutral. And they hold so many possibilities...
A very open way of designing. Maybe a very frustrating one too? I tend to want to rush things when I get a bit stuck...
Added stripes of color would be interesting: yellow or red?
Added blocks of different lenght, ligning them up in rows (coin layout)
    Added texture from different fabrics...

So many options. Have fun with your design process!

  10. I love a neutral quilt and think you have something really good going here! I like it straight up neutral, but also like the "Sunday's progress" one, as the positioning of those little bits, really keeps my eye moving... nice energy to it. Trust your gut!

  11. I use a lot of color and contrast, always, so that staying neutral challenge appeals me in a very strong way. It is a real challenge, and I think you are winning. Keep it neutral!

  12. I LOVE seeing your progress - a study in neutrals. Very beautiful. The pic that speaks most to me, is the second last. Those tiny strips just make the whole quilt glow, imho. Wishing you a lovely and creative week:)
